My best friend is a "plant expert" and has gifted me a new plant the last 3 years for my birthday. It's kind of become a joke at this point, but it is more than welcomed on my side -- keep the plants coming!
Living in an apartment with two dogs means my space and time can be a bit limited, but she assured me that these houseplants are not just easy on the eyes but also easy to care for.
1. Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum)
The Spider Plant is an absolute classic. Its arching green and white striped leaves add a fresh, lively vibe to any room. What makes it perfect for busy folks like us is its resilience. It tolerates a range of conditions and is super easy to propagate if you want to share the plant love with friends. Bonus: Spider Plants are non-toxic to dogs, so no worries if your pups decide to take a curious nibble.
2. ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)
The ZZ Plant is my go-to recommendation for anyone starting their houseplant journey. Its glossy, dark green leaves can survive in almost any light condition (except direct sunlight) and it's known for being drought-tolerant. This plant is perfect for those who might forget to water their plants occasionally.
3. Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)
Pothos is a real trooper and can thrive on neglect. Its trailing vines make it a beautiful addition to shelves, hanging baskets, or even as a climbing plant. Pothos can handle various light conditions and irregular watering schedules, making it ideal for the busy pet parent.
4. Boston Fern (Nephrolepis exaltata)
Boston Ferns are excellent for adding a touch of elegance with their lush, feathery fronds. They’re a bit more demanding in terms of humidity but still easy to manage with a little attention. These ferns are non-toxic to dogs and can help purify the air in your home.
5. Cast Iron Plant (Aspidistra elatior)
True to its name, the Cast Iron Plant is virtually indestructible. It’s perfect for low-light areas and requires very little water, making it an ideal plant for those with a hectic schedule. Plus, it's safe for pets, so you can rest easy knowing your dogs are safe around it.
Bringing a bit of nature into your apartment doesn't have to be a chore. With these low-maintenance houseplants, you can enjoy the beauty and benefits of greenery without adding much to your to-do list. Plus, they're safe for your furry friends, ensuring a harmonious living space for both you and your pets.
What are your favorite plants that you have in your home?
I have a few snake plants -- they clean the air and are super low maintenance. Check those out. They are cheap too!!
